Something that I heard on ESPN radio

Let me first start off by wishing everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to everyone. Now, I heard something I ESPN radio with Colin Cowherd today and he made a lot of very intresting points. Now, I'm not a fan of the NBA by any means, actually I root for players more so than teams but, a journalist in Vancouver, British Columbia said that the NBA "struck out" when it came to having a professional franchise in Seattle, Washington. The writer then goes on to say that the NBA is a thug league.

My Thoughts: Really? Does this guy have any clue what the NBA has done in the last 5 years or so? David Stern (NBA Commissioner) has changed the entire landscape of his league. David Stern has changed so many rules (outside of the game itself) it's very similar to the NFL personal conduct code. For example: Players must wear a suit when going to and from games with teammates. They are representing the NBA and they want to be represented with class and accountablilty. No more do you see the chains hanging down thier necks or clothes that looks like they just woke up and put on the nearest thing they could find.

The radio host went on to say during his show that he's had NFL players on there that cant make a complete sentence and he interviewed someone from the Tennessee Titans that couldn't come close to complete a sentence. I remember listening to Willis McGahee on the Jim Rome show about 3 years ago and all I heard was mumbling. Jim Rome actually stopped the interview and said we'll call you back later when you want to do the show.

Getting back to the original topic. The NBA didnt "strike out" in seattle. Seattle "struck out" on the NBA. The people of Seattle didnt care about basketball and they showed it by not showing up to the games. Seattle cares about the Seahawks and the Mariners...thats it! I'm saying that by not ever even being to Seattle. It's obivious! Just watch Sportscenter sometime. You can tell who cares about what sport just by looking at the people in the stands (if there's anyone in the stands)

Does race still exist in sports today?

Charles Barkley a former Auburn player and NBA superstar has come out and said the hiring of Gene Chizik is mainly a race thing and not a football thing. Turner Gil who is currently the head coach of the Buffalo Bulls is the man that Charles Barkley is referring to. Gil had just won the first every conference title in the schools' history with an upset win over 12th ranked Ball State 42-24. When Gil took over the program he was most arrguable taking over a program that was worst in the country. Winning only 13 games in the 10 seasons of being Division 1 before Gil took over.

Charles said that you cant compare resumes when it comes to these two coaches. Chizik who won only 9 games in 2 seasons with Iowa State and Turner Gil just came off his best season as a head coach with 8 wins just this season alone and has gone 15-22 in the 3 years he's been here.

My thoughts: Barkley may have a point here. Even though I like to think as a society we have all grown up and racism doesnt exist but it does. The NFL has something called the "Rooney Rule" which means everytime you interview a coach you have to interview a person of color. I'm unaware of college having the same rule but as of today there are only 3 african-american head coaches. Personally I dont believe that means that african-americans are bad coaches...hell, I wish Turner Gil would coach my team (Buffalo Bills) but I'll settle for him coaching the UB Bulls.
